Michael Phelps accomplished the greatest individual feat in Olympic Games history by winning a record eight golds in Beijing. In competing with the most-searched athletes of 2008, though, the American swimmer couldn't even make it onto the medal stand.

Surprisingly, in a sporting year highlighted by the three-week summer spectacle in China, the top three spots were occupied by non-Olympians: Maria Sharapova, Gina Carano and Danica Patrick. Sure, sex appeal was a factor in their popularity, but these athletes were more than just pretty faces.

In January, Sharapova captured her third Grand Slam tennis title at the Australian Open and held the No. 1 ranking going into the French Open before suffering a shoulder injury that forced her to miss the Olympics and the U.S. Open. In April, Patrick became the first woman to win an IndyCar race when she passed up a late pit stop for fuel to outsmart the field at the Indy Japan 300.

Carano's sudden emergence mirrored the rapid rise of mixed martial arts. The sport's growing popularity led to mainstream acceptance in 2008 and to its network television debut (in prime time no less) on CBS, whose executives hyped their broadcasts with Kimbo Slice, the street-fighting YouTube sensation. The fighter who ended up stealing both of CBS's shows was Carano, whose girl-next-door looks belied her devastating fight skills demonstratedd in two highly entertaining victories.

Athletic achievements weren't the main reason why Olympian heartthrobs Amanda Beard and Leryn Franco as well as golfer Natalie Gulbis got more than their share of attention on the Web. Beard didn't come close to medaling in Beijing, but the U.S. swimmer did land a spot in People's 100 Most Beautiful list. Franco, a javelin thrower from Paraguay and a beauty pageant runner-up, won the hearts of many admirers despite finishing 51st at the Olympics. Gulbis, the glamour girl of women's golf, generated more interest with her off-the-course endeavors including a gig on the upcoming "Celebrity Apprentice."

Continuing this theme of beauty, the beautiful game of soccer placed two of its biggest names in the athlete searches' top 10. Cristiano Ronaldo scored 42 goals to help the world's most popular soccer club, Manchester United, win the championships of England and Europe and earned the continent's player of the year award. Former Man United standout David Beckham proved his star power by rounding out the list despite a disappointing season with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He managed to keep himself in the soccer spotlight by joining England's exclusive club of players who've made 100 national team appearances.

No athletic effort captured the public's fascination quite like Phelps' pursuit of Mark Spitz's record of seven golds in one Olympics. Dramatic victories in the 400-meter relay and 100 butterfly further cemented Phelps' legend, but despite being a familiar face to Olympic viewers (he won six golds four years ago in Athens), users were still curious about the Baltimore native, searching for information about his age, salary, well-documented diet and double-jointed arms as well as details about his personal life, namely his father absent from the Beijing scene and dating status.

With seven world records, Phelps looked good in surpassing Spitz's 36-year-old mark. He just didn't look that good to get the Search top spot.

Some bands struggle to play two gigs in a day, let alone three. US Rockers, Simple Plan however, laughed in the face of Camden yesterday, when they played a duo of venues in North London. After an afternoon spent recovering from Australia Day celebrations, my head wasn’t ready for the onslaught ahead. Two Seatwave reviewers covered the lunchtime acoustic gig at the tiny Camden Barfly, and the marginally bigger Underworld gig at 3:30

pm. Hell, if I was tired… what state was the band in?

As the day progressed, the reports hitting my mobile phone were frenzied and positive. “You’re going to love the gig tonight – they were amazing this morning!”.
Anticipation wasn’t just rife in my corner of the train… the streets of Camden were heaving too. Some eager punters had been queuing outside the Electric Ballroom since 6am and others had trekked over Europe to be there.

The line that snaked its way up Camden High Road throbbed with an eclectic mix of fans. Girls in tutus, journos, pierced bits aplenty, dads escorting minors, empty vodka bottles and painfully fashionable boys rearranging their side swept locks. It was the liquorish allsorts of line-ups – each punter ready for the mother of all gigs.

México, 11 Dic (Notimex).- Ante la desventaja en el marcador, el técnico Benjamín Galindo afirmó que Cruz Azul va a tratar por todos los medios de revertir la pizarra ante Toluca, que esta noche ganó 2-0.Diablos Rojos así tomó ventaja en la final por el título del Torneo Apertura 2008 del futbol mexicano, gracias a los tantos del paraguayo Paulo da Silva y de Sergio Amaury Ponce.La idea del "Maestro" Galindo es que sus pupilos tengan orden defensivo, no reciban gol y hacer un tanto en los primeros minutos del encuentro de "vuelta" del próximo domingo en el estadio Nemesio Díez."Hay que ser pacientes para no tener errores atrás y hacer un gol tempranero. Tengo tres días para preparar el encuentro y dar la vuelta al marcador", expresó.Obviamente, no da por perdida la final al decir que "el equipo va a estar bien (mentalmente), es obvio que en este momento duele la derrota, pero tenemos tres días para levantarnos y vamos a ir con la frente en alto".Aceptó que esta noche su equipo no generó llegadas en el primer tiempo, periodo en que Diablos Rojos cerró los espacios, tuvo la posesión del esférico. "En el segundo tiempo tuvimos dos o tres llegadas, pero no la contundencia".

México, 11 Dic (Notimex).- Toluca cumplió hoy sólo con el primer objetivo al imponerse 2-0 a Cruz Azul en la final de "ida" del Torneo Apertura 2008 del futbol mexicano, señaló el delantero chileno Héctor Mancilla."Estoy contento por el triunfo porque Toluca creo que fue muy superior a Cruz Azul, y se cumplió el primer objetivo", indicó el ariete andino poco antes de abordar el autobús del equipo mexiquense.Consideró que más allá de que el conjunto cruazulino no fue el mismo de partidos anteriores en la fase final, el triunfo de Diablos Rojos se fincó en el buen trabajo realizado por ellos mismos."Nosotros hicimos nuestro trabajo, hicimos ver mal a Cruz Azul pero por méritos propios. Creo que hicimos un buen futbol, manejamos muy bien el balón, tuvimos dos oportunidades a pelota parada y las aprovechamos bien", señaló.

El campeón de goleo del Apertura 2008 dijo que no deben confiarse porque aún faltan 90 minutos del capítulo de "vuelta" en el estadio Nemesio Díez. "Esto no acaba aquí, hay que jugar de la misma forma porque no hemos ganado nada".

México, 11 Dic (Notimex).- Tener una ventaja de dos goles de visita al minuto 22, reflejó el trabajo que hizo Toluca en el estadio Azul, en un primer capítulo de la final del Torneo Apertura 2008 del futbol mexicano que Diablos Rojos esperaba más apretado.Así lo señaló el volante brasileño naturalizado mexicano Antonio Naelson "Sinha", quien apuntó también que ahora deben finiquitar la lucha por el título en el estadio Nemesio Díez, el próximo domingo."Todos esperábamos un partido más complicado, pero se hizo un buen trabajo en conjunto otra vez y la ventaja de esos dos goles nos dieron la tranquilidad para manejar el partido", señaló el jugador del cuadro toluqueño.Expuso que la ventaja obtenida esta noche les da un buen "colchón" para el encuentro del domingo en casa. "Estamos tranquilos, pero sabemos que tenemos que mejorar".Sinha aseguró que espera para el juego de "vuelta" a un Cruz Azul que no de el título por perdido, por lo que deberán aplicarse ante su afición para llevarse la novena corona, sexta en torneos cortos.

Yaquis culminan barrida con 13 carreras ante Tomateros

OBREGON, México (AP) - Agustín Murillo empujó tres carreras con un doble con las bases llenas en la quinta entrada y Saíd Gutiérrez remolcó dos más con doblete en el sexto capítulo para los Yaquis de Ciudad Obregón que apalearon 13-5 a Tomateros de Culiacán y los barrieron en la serie.

El lanzador de Ligas Mayores Rodrigo López (1-1) cargó con la derrota. López salió del montículo después de tener una discusión en la que empujó al umpire central por diferencias sobre sus lanzamientos.

La victoria fue para Luis Mendoza (2-1). Por Obregón, Brian Spilborghs se estrenó en la temporada con cuadrangular y tres carreras producidas.

Murillo se colocó a tres dobletes de la marca de todos los tiempos en la Liga Mexicana del Pacífico cuando restan 15 jornadas por disputarse.

En Los Mochis, los Naranjeros de Hermosillo sumaron cinco carreras en la séptima entrada en un triunfo por 6-4 ante los Cañeros para completar la barrida en la serie. Edgar González (2-1) se apuntó el triunfo. El descalabro fue para Heriberto Ruelas (1-1) de Los Mochis, mientras que el salvamento quedó en el registro de Dale Thayer (8).

En Guasave, los Venados de Mazatlán atacaron temprano a los Algodoneros y resistieron una reacción tardía para ganar 8-6 el tercero de la serie.

Mazatlán evitó la barrida y empató en el primer lugar de la tabla. Lorenzo Buelna (1) destacó a la ofensiva por los Venados al empalmar un cuadrangular de tres vueltas.

If your MLB GameChannel or StatTracker isn't updating, we think we know the reason why. Adobe added additional security to the latest version of their Flash player (version 9.0.124.0 released April 8th) that doesn't allow us to connect to our servers in the way we're used to doing it.
We're working to find the right solution to their new security requirements, but it's going to take a few more days or so to jump through the hoops needed to get you your scores.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience, and even more sorry that the only work around we have is to follow these instructions to downgrade your Flash player back to version 9.0.115.0:

Madness already?: We've just launched our NCAA bracket game. I know, you're thinking that the teams aren't going to be picked until next month, so why the rush?
A few reasons:
We've introduced customized scoring, so you might need some time to tweak your pool in order to get it just right for your particular bracket style.
A new "popular picks" bracket - consider it the S&P of the NCAA Tourney. How will you stack up?
But the main reason is that we wanted to make sure you had enough time to plan out what you're going to be doing with the five million bucks we'll give you for your perfect bracket. We wouldn't want to give you all that money just to have you making some quick, foolish decisions.

Wade’s start puts him in rare NBA air

MIAMI (AP)—Even Dwyane Wade was a bit astonished when he learned about the company he’s in these days.

Out of the nearly 4,000 players who’ve suited up in NBA history, only two— Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan—finished a season with the sort of scoring, rebound and assist numbers Wade is putting up so far this season for the Miami Heat. Healthy again, Wade is averaging a league-best 29.5 points, along with 7.5 assists and 5 rebounds through 21 games.

Besides Robertson (who did it six times) and Jordan, no other player has averaged at least that in all three categories, although three others have been close—Larry Bird in 1986-87, John Havlicek twice in the early 1970s and Wade’s good friend LeBron James, who averaged 30 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.2 assists last season for Cleveland.

“Hopefully I can do better,” Wade said. “For right now, it’s always great to be in the conversation with anybody the likes of Michael Jordan and Oscar … but they did do it for a whole season. Mine is only 20-some games in. I’ve got 60-some more to go.”

So can he keep this up?

“I guess we’ll see,” Wade said.

Across the board, Wade is on his way to having his best season in a number of categories. His scoring is 2.1 points higher than his previous per-game average best. He’s also on pace to establish new career-highs in field-goal shooting, 3-pointers made, steals and blocked shots, and is certainly the biggest reason why the Heat—who were the NBA’s laughingstock last year—are off to a 12-9 start this season.

For Wade, the two injury-marred seasons that followed Miami’s 2006 championship campaign are “dead and gone,” just like the stigma of last year’s 15-67 debacle.

“Health is a big part of all player’s performance,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. “This league is too good. If you’re not healthy, you can’t do it, I don’t care how gifted you are. He’s obviously healthy and he’s one of the best players in the game right now.

“He does everything. Blocks shots, passes, gets steals, he can score so many different ways. He’s healthy. You can see it.”

By now, Wade’s medical history is well-known to those who’ve followed his meteoric rise in Miami.

He dislocated his left shoulder in February 2007, a season where he battled sore knees as well. By the time he came back from the shoulder injury, the knees were shot, and so were Miami’s chances of defending its championship. The Heat got into the playoffs, but with Wade dragging one leg around, got swept by the Chicago Bulls.

Last season was worse. Wade was limited to 51 games because of the myriad of injuries, the Heat fell apart, Shaquille O’Neal got traded and Pat Riley decided at season’s end to hang up his whistle for the second and final time.

So before heading off to the Beijing Olympics, Wade adopted a catchphrase: “Something to prove.”

Based on the way he’s playing, that’s more than just words.

“He’s always been good, but what he’s doing now, I don’t know if anybody can play any better, at both ends,” Charlotte coach Larry Brown said. “He makes everybody better every night and just plays at such a high level. It’s kind of neat to watch.”

Brown said that before his Bobcats faced the Heat on Monday night.

That night Wade scored 41 points—his NBA-best seventh game of 35 or more already this season—and added eight rebounds to lead Miami to a 100-96 win over the Bobcats, and punctuated the evening with a down-the-lane, poster-quality dunk of Charlotte’s Emeka Okafor during the Heat’s fourth-quarter comeback.

And with Wade, it’s not just the stats. He’s never played defense at this level. His passing seems smoother. His mid-range jumper is more effective than ever. Maybe most importantly, he’s not tumbling to the court while trying some high-flying layup every few minutes, something he was guilty of quite a bit in his first five seasons.

“He’s having an unbelievable year,” Heat forward Shawn Marion said. “He’s scoring the ball tremendously, he’s doing a lot on defense, a lot on offense. When you talk about players coming out of the gate right now, he’s definitely at the top of my list.”

The Olympic experience played a huge part in this early season surge, Wade said.

He wasn’t a starter in Beijing for Team USA, yet might have been the best player on the American roster. He led the red, white and blue in scoring, and his 27 points in the gold-medal game against Spain ensured that he wouldn’t be flying home with another disappointing medal. Wade was part of the bronze-medal team in Athens in 2004 and tossed that prize into a closet, soon forgetting its whereabouts.

“I don’t think there’s any question, playing at that level this summer was a huge help for him coming into this season,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

If Wade finishes with anything close to the types of numbers he’s posting now, he’ll almost certainly be part of the MVP conversation—like Olympic teammates like James, Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul, along with Boston’s Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, among others.

But unlike the Celtics, Lakers, Cavaliers and Hornets, the Heat aren’t considered a championship-caliber team.

And Wade knows that will hurt his individual-award chances at season’s end. So he’s not even thinking about it, and insists he’s just trying to keep the young Heat moving forward.

“I know I’m playing as well as anybody in the league,” Wade said. “But I’ve got to continue to help this team get over the hump … and it’s going to take a lot of work.”

Torn ankle limits leave Artest uncertain for NBA Rockets

HOUSTON, Texas (AFP) - Houston Rockets forward Ron Artest will be uncertain for upcoming National Basketball Associationgames after an MRI examperformed on his right ankle showed two slightly torn ligaments.

Artest, who has averaged 15.7 points and 5.9 rebounds in 20 games in his first season with the Rockets, could have suffered the injuries as a result of playing on concrete for years, according to team officials.

Artest hurt his ankle last month in what was first thought to be merely a sprain, but when the pain continued, the deeper exam showed how the sprain has aggravated the ankle tendons.

While Artest did not play on Monday in a 109-97 loss to Memphis, he scored 19 points in a 92-84 win over Atlantaon Tuesday and hopes to be back Friday when the Rockets play at Golden State.

At 14-8, the Rockets - powered by the play of Chinese star center Yao Ming - are fighting New Orleansand San Antoniofor the lead in the NBA Southwest division.

NBA’s All-Star Saturday heading to big screen

NEW YORK (AP)—All-Star Saturday night is heading to the big screen.

The event will be shown live in 3D to 80 digitally equipped theaters, the NBA and Turner Sports announced Wednesday. It’s the first fully marketed deal to deliver an NBA event to the public in live 3D.

All-Star Saturday, featuring events such as the slam dunk contest and 3-point shootout, will take place Feb. 14 in Phoenix and be televised by TNT. It will be distributed by Cinedigm Digital Cinema to as many as 160 screens in 35 states.

“The last few seasons we have embraced 3D HD as a new and innovative way to experience the excitement of our game and look forward to putting fans coast-to-coast in a courtside seat for All-Star Saturday Night,” Steve Hellmuth, the NBA’s executive vice president of operations and technology, said in a statement.

This will be the league’s fourth 3D HD event, but first shown nationwide.

The NBA showed the 2007 All-Star Saturday and the All-Star game in Las Vegas in 3D HD to an invitation-only gathering at the Mandalay Bay. It also held a viewing party for Cleveland fans on four 60-foot screens at Quicken Loans Arena during Game 2 of the ‘07 NBA finals, while the Mavericks showed a regular-season game at the Landmark Theater in Dallas last season.

Opt-out clause key to Sabathia going to Yankees By Tim Brown and Gordon Edes Dec 10, 11:04 am EST

LAS VEGAS – Baseball’s perennial high-rollers, the New York Yankees, scored the biggest coup of the winter meetings when CC Sabathia reached preliminary agreement on a deal that will pay him $161 million over the next seven years.

The deal, according to a source close to negotiations, gives Sabathia the right to opt out of the contract after the first three years, by which time he will have been paid $69 million. Sabathia appreciated the clause because it satisfied concerns he had about living in New York and the impact it might have on his wife and three children.

He will make his opt-out decision after the 2011 season with four years and $92 million remaining on the deal, at which time he could renegotiate, leave or stay.

There has been no official confirmation of the deal. An announcement is not expected until after Sabathia passes a physical, which he is expected to undergo in New York within the next couple of days.

The New York Post was the first to report that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman got his man after visiting Sabathia and his wife, Amber, in San Francisco, the third straight day Cashman had met with the 28-year-old left-hander.

Sabathia’s agreement could signal the start of some serious dealing the next several days, with the Yankees also heavily in the market for at least one more free-agent starter from the top-tier list of A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe and Ben Sheets. The Yankees are facing strong competition from Atlanta for Burnett, while the Phillies and possibly the Red Sox remain players for Lowe.

Sabathia now tops a rotation that will also have Chien-Ming Wang back from injury and the emerging Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees also are trying to persuade veteran Andy Pettitte to come back for another year.

And while the Yankees’ primary focuse remains pitching, there is the possibility that Cashman, flush with cash, could also pose a run at Mark Teixeira, though the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels are the front-runners for the switch-hitting first baseman.

The Yankees’ offer – with Cashman adding a year and $21 million to the original six-year, $140 million proposal the Bombers made weeks ago – eroded whatever preference Sabathia had to remain on the West Coast. With the Yankees having missed the playoffs for the first time after 13 straight appearances, Cashman was under pressure to show that he could still deliver the biggest prize on the market.

Another factor was that no West Coast team had made Sabathia an offer, a fact that must have weighed on the pitcher as the Yankees made their full-court press. The Milwaukee Brewers, who Sabathia led to the playoffs after a mid-season trade from the Cleveland Indians, were the only other team to make him an offer, and it was for five years and $100 million.

Lawmaker proposing bill to end BCS system

WASHINGTON (AP)—Taking aim at a BCS system he said “consistently misfires,” a member of Congress planned to introduce legislation Wednesday that would force college football to adopt a playoff to determine the national champion.

Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the ranking Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, didn’t specify what sort of playoff he wants—only that the BCS should go.

“In some years the sport’s national championship winner was left unsettled, and at least one school was left out of the many millions of dollars in revenue that accompany the title,” Barton said in a statement released ahead of the bill’s introduction. “Despite repeated efforts to improve the system, the controversy rages on.”

He said the bill—being co-sponsored by Reps. Bobby Rush, an Illinois Democrat, and Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican—“will prohibit the marketing, promotion, and advertising of a postseason game as a ‘national championship’ football game, unless it is the result of a playoff system. Violations of the prohibition will be treated as violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act as an unfair or deceptive act or practice.”

The BCS was created in 1998 by the six most powerful conferences. Since then, the system has been tweaked to make it easier for teams from smaller conferences to qualify for the top games. The sites for the four BCS bowls—the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta—take turns hosting a championship game between the top two teams in the BCS standings, which are based on two human polls and six computer ratings.

This season, Florida (12-1) and Oklahoma (12-1) will meet in the BCS title game Jan. 8 in Miami.

Barton cited Southern California in 2003 and undefeated Auburn in 2004 as examples of worthy teams left out of the BCS national championship game.

“This year, we again have two teams with one loss each playing for the ‘championship,’ while two undefeated teams and four additional teams with only one loss will play in bowl games, but none can become ‘champion,”’ he said.

When an Energy and Commerce subcommittee held a hearing about the BCS in 2005, lawmakers said they weren’t going to pursue legislation.

“The BCS method of determining who is No. 1 consistently misfires,” Barton said Wednesday. “Simply exposing the flaws and subjecting them to discussion … hasn’t led to improvement by those who run the system.”

Arena Football League won’t suspend play for now

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Arena Football League wasn’t quite ready to roll up the turf on its 50-yard indoor fields or put those lanky goal posts in storage.

The AFL’s 2009 season remains on schedule—for now.

The league’s board of directors met via conference call Wednesday but “despite rumors and reports to the contrary” did not suspend the upcoming season.

“The Board will continue to meet regularly to examine any and all long-term structural improvement options for the AFL,” the league said in a statement.

The meeting came amid a tumultuous week in which the league seemed poised to cancel the season.

The 16-team league repeatedly has delayed the start of free agency and the release of its 2009 schedule after an offseason of uncertainty. No replacement has been named for longtime commissioner David Baker, who abruptly resigned in July two days before the ArenaBowl championship game.

“There’s no guarantee you’d come back. You never know,” he said on Wednesday. “We all know there are some things that need to be corrected, and that’s what they’re working on. They’re working on the economic model, and it needs to be corrected. Maybe this makes the league stronger. We’re looking to be around for another 20 years.”

The AFL’s woes come at a time when the world of sports, once thought to be largely recession-proof, has felt the economic chill. The NFL has said it would cut 150 jobs, while the NBA and NASCAR also have laid off dozens of workers. The NHL is in a hiring freeze while the Internet operation for Major League Baseball also has trimmed positions.

It’s still possible there could be big changes to the arena league.

Philadelphia Soul wide receiver Chris Jackson told the AP that the league’s players had agreed to take pay cuts and had been told Tuesday that the season likely would be canceled.

Jackson said he still isn’t convinced the AFL will play in ‘09.

“I’m still reluctant to get too happy,” he said. “There’s still a lot to plan out. We need to figure out how many teams are going to be in it, the finances of it all, and a working financial model for the future. There’s still a lot to be done.”

Players’ union spokesman Carl Francis declined to discuss specifics about the 2009 season.

“We definitely are in discussions with the Arena Football League on these issues,” he said.

Officials from several teams said they were proceeding with business as usual for now.

“We’re readying contracts right now for when we’re ready to move forward with free agency,” said Luke Stahmer, vice president of operations for the Colorado Crush. “We’re buying helmets and jerseys as if it’s a regular season. We don’t want to get caught with our pants down, so to speak.”

The 22-year-old Arena Football League has lasted longer than the American Football League, World League, USFL and XFL combined.

Since November 2007, the AFL’s board of directors has been looking into various ways to bolster the league’s finances.

One proposal involved individual franchise owners ceding control of the league to new investors. Sports Business Journal reported in October that AFL owners had approved a tentative deal with Platinum Equity in which the company would invest up to $100 million and assume management control of the league.

That deal, however, has yet to be completed.

There are still no clear answers when the AFL’s 16 teams might be able to start signing free agents. The dispersal draft for the players of the New Orleans VooDoo, also delayed indefinitely, was originally scheduled for October.

New Orleans dropped out of the league despite being among the top five in AFL attendance. Saints owner Tom Benson, who also owned the VooDoo, said the decision was based on “circumstances currently affecting the league and the team.”

The AFL’s minor-league operation, AF2, is still in operation.

ESPN acquired national TV rights to the AFL in 2006 and has a minority stake in the indoor league. ESPN signed a five-year deal to have multimedia rights that included everything from Internet to radio to publishing and international distribution.

Real Madrid’s bailout plan: Buy players

Want to energize a nation’s economy? Try a few big interest rate cuts to encourage spending.

Want to inject life into the January transfer window? Make sure Real Madrid has a miserable start to the season.

The ongoing turmoil engulfing the Spanish giant continues to rage as another week passed with further ructions. And the angry scenes following Sunday’s tumultuous 4-3 home defeat to Sevilla was not even the most heated event of the weekend.

That came at a stormy annual general meeting during which club members screamed for the resignation of president Ramon Calderon and only approved Real’s financial budget by a narrow margin.

With its bid for the La Liga title slipping away rapidly and the vultures circling, it is increasingly likely that Calderon will try to spend his way out of trouble next month.

A deal to sign Dutch striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar from Ajax for $25 million has already gone through, but expect more big names to follow. Once again, Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to come into the equation as Calderon knows that if he could pull off a blockbuster deal for Manchester United’s Portuguese winger it would ease the pressure on him considerably.

In any case, the cash that Real throws around in January should stimulate a market that may otherwise have been reasonably flat. As we have seen in previous years, the money finds a way of trickling down and has a substantial knock-on effect.

But it could be the last throw of the dice for Calderon as he fights to save Real’s season and his own position.

The First XI

1. Get him an Advil

Poor Roman Abramovich. The Chelsea owner’s billions are starting to dwindle, after being hit by the global economic downturn and the decline in his business profits.

Don’t worry. Abramovich won’t starve any time soon. However, several of his key investments have fared poorly in the current market, among them multinational steel producer Evraz, which has seen drastic drops in value after the Russian ploughed $3.2 billion of his wealth into it.

Abramovich has introduced a new policy of frugality at Chelsea, a far cry from the early days of his reign when the club appeared to be treated as his personal plaything and vast sums were splashed about. The days of big spending in the transfer market appear to have gone, leaving head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to work with what he already has.

2. Get him a beer

Thierry Henry seems, for now at least, to have stopped sulking, and Barcelona is reaping the benefits.

The former Arsenal striker looked a lost and listless figure at times last season following his switch from the English Premier League. But Henry was mightily impressive in Barca’s 4-0 victory over Valencia, not just for his hat trick of goals but also for his tireless work rate and team focus.

Henry has had to adapt to being one of many stars in Spain, instead of the main man as he was with a young Arsenal team. The way he has grown into the new role is just one of the reasons behind the club’s spectacular start to the season.

3. Get him some earplugs

Torino coach Gianni De Biasi looks set to be fired after being on the receiving end of a stream of abuse from his team’s fans during a 4-1 home thumping by Fiorentina. Supporters repeatedly screamed insults at De Biasi and confronted club president Urbano Cairo afterward to demand a change of leadership.

6. A round of applause for …

• Sydney Leroux. She proved why she is one of the most exciting talents in women’s soccer by helping the United States win the Under-20 Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory against North Korea. Leroux won the Golden Ball (player of the tournament) and the Golden Boot (top scorer).

• University of North Carolina. The Tar Heels won the NCAA women’s national championship for the 19th time in 27 years, beating Notre Dame 2-1 in Sunday’s final.

• Villarreal. With American Jozy Altidore playing 90 minutes, Villarreal fought back from a 3-0 deficit to draw 3-3 with Getafe.

7. Get them a Kleenex

• Hoffenheim. The German Bundesliga’s fairytale leader suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Bayern Munich, conceding a last-minute winner on Luca Toni’s deflected shot.

• Santos Laguna. Even loan signing Cuauhtemoc Blanco couldn’t keep Santos in the hunt for the Mexican Apertura, as they lost 2-1 to Toluca in the semifinals.

• Franck Ribery. The Bayern Munich star was outraged at dropping to 16th place in voting for the European Footballer of the Year award, claiming he has been playing better than last year when he finished seventh. He has a point.

8. Get ready to say hello to …

Miami Barcelona. The expansion race for Major League Soccer’s two 2011 slots is heating up, but already the Barcelona-backed Miami bid seems to be a strong favorite for one of the places. Barcelona has made firm assurances of its commitment and Bolivian businessman Marcelo Claure has impressed the MLS hierarchy with his vision and drive.

9. Get ready to say goodbye to …

Robbie Rogers. The 21-year-old Columbus Crew winger seems happy to spend another season in Major League Soccer, but he is sure to receive some decent offers in the January transfer window. With European scouting of North America continuing to increase, Rogers’ efforts in helping the Crew win the MLS title garnered plenty of attention across the Atlantic.

10. Get excited about …

The FIFA World Club Cup. Sure, the tournament featuring FIFA’s respective continental champions isn’t the most thrilling spectacle, but it’s a tidy little tournament which usually has a few entertaining games. The 2008 version starts in Japan this week, and Mexican champion Pachuca has a decent shot at meeting Manchester United in the final if it can get past Egypt’s Al Ahly and Ecuador’s South American champ Liga de Quito.

11. Why it’s good to be a soccer player

Manchester United academy coach Brian McClair lifted the lid this week on the extreme level of pampering afforded to United’s millionaire players. He revealed how a giant flat-screen television has been installed in the training ground locker room to help players manage their day.

“There were times of training, massage times, pedicure times, hair-care times, whose turn it was to speak to MUTV, who to instruct to run a bath for you, weights sessions, yoga times and nutrition advice,” McClair said. “It also had the lunch menu, including how the food would be prepared, at what temperature and how it would be served.”

How sweet.

CHICAGO (AP)—Houston forward Brian Ching and Colorado midfielder Pablo Mastroeni were among 19 players picked Tuesday for a five-day training camp ahead of next week’s World Cup qualifier against Guatemala.

The United States (4-1) already clinched advancement to next year’s regional finals and is expected to leave off several Europe-based regulars for the Nov. 19 match at Commerce City, Colo.

Seventeen MLS players who have finished their club seasons will join goalkeeper Troy Perkins and defender Clarence Goodson, each with clubs in Norway, for the Nov. 12-16 training camp.

For Guatemala (1-2-2) to advance, Los Chapines must win and hope Trinidad and Tobago (2-1-2) loses at home against Cuba. The Americans are 26-1-7 in home qualifiers since May 1985, the only defeat 3-2 to Honduras at Washington in September 2001.

Arsenal set for Iaquinta and De Rossi?

Arsene Wenger is set to change his transfer policy and opt for more experience in his side, according to reports. Allegedly he is set to land Italian giants Vincenzo Iaquinta and Daniele De Rossi.

Wenger’s transfer policy in the last few years has been to bring through the young talents of the world and turn them into stars, but he now looks set to add to his squad with more experience.

Iaquinta of Juventus made his name at Serie A club Udinese, where he scored 58 goals in a total of 176 league appearances. This brilliant scoring form earned the Italian striker a move to Juventus when Udinese refused to meet his wage demands. Since then, his goal-scoring form has dropped somewhat, with just eight in 30 appearances for The Old Lady.

A move to Arsenal for Iaqunita would be a strange one, with the North London club full to the brim with striking talent such as Emmanuel Adebayor, Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner, Eduardo and Carlos Vela. However, reports suggest that Wenger is ready to make a move for the 28-year-old striker in the January transfer window.

A more likely transfer is the purchase of Roma’s highly rated defensive midfielder Daniele De Rossi. De Rossi has become a revelation under Luciano Spalletti at Roma and has cemented his place in the side as a holding midfielder.

Arsenal have been on the lookout for some experience in the middle of the park, and De Rossi would fit the bill perfectly, providing some much-needed energy and tackling ability to a lightweight Arsenal midfield.

The Gunners have been outmuscled in the games they have lost this season to Hull City, Fulham and Stoke City, as all three bullied Arsenal out of the game. De Rossi would restore some fight in the Arsenal midfield.

Wenger is quoted as saying that he is now looking “to bring in men who are proven at the highest level,” and both Iaquinta and De Rossi would help the young Guns in their quest for trophies.

Whether Juventus and Roma would be moved by any attempt from the London side to pick up their players, though, is another matter entirely.

Fine, the D&D and lip gloss part isn't true, but Wisconsin linebacker Jonathan Casillas did get busted for being sloshed out of his mind while riding a moped. A fucking moped.

DENVER - Less than 24 hours after playing in the last game of the season, the Denver Broncos say 24-year-old Darrent Williams was killed.

According to Denver Police, Williams was killed in an early morning shooting after someone with a gun pulled up alongside the white Hummer stretch limousine he and wide receiver Javon Walker were riding in and fired multiple shots.

Three people were shot and police say the limo was sprayed with bullets. At the scene, 9NEWS could see what appeared to be ten bullet holes in the limo.

Authorities say they believe the shooting was a drive-by, and that the shooter or shooters did not know who was in the vehicle. Police say the shots were fired with a semi-automatic weapon.

James: Murder is the ultimate act of selfishness, pride and fear. My feelings echo Coach Shanahan's when he stated, I am speachless with sadness. Darrent Williams was a fan (and personal) favorite who had a happy, infectious smile and twinkling eyes. He played with passion for the game and yet was a gentleman on and off the field. I pray to Avalokiteshvara that compassion will be the constant companion to the Williams family as they grieve. Colorado and the city of Denver love their Broncos and see the players as extended family. Our collective hearts ache, cry and hurt over this senseless act of violence.

Killing a fellow sentient being only takes a moment but the repercussions last for lifetimes. These killers will pay dearly for their horrific actions and it will be their own actions that will demand and ultimately receive that justice. We can not avoid our actions any more then we can avoid our shadows. The pain and suffering that the family, friends and fans are feeling right now is nothing compared to the pain, suffering and misery that the murderers will experience for who knows how many lifetimes. My heart aches for the killers too for they have wasted many lives and lifetimes.

Nobody wins when violence erupts and the ripples of such wasteful actions touch many in our interconnected reality. And in a way we all have a responsibility for this killing since it is our collective consciousness that allows the seeds of violence in society to ripen and take their deadly toll.

May we all be more mindful of our actions that we might not water the seeds of anger and violence in ourselves, others and in our greater world. May we also be more mindful of karma for we do not live or act in a vaccuum.

We will greatly miss your energy Darrent but we know that your larger then life energy will be reborn and hopefully as a Buddha.

By now you've no doubt heard the news that Paul Krugman has been awarded this year's Nobel Price in economics, "for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity."

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences explains the award of what is officially called The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2008:

International Trade and Economic Geography

Patterns of trade and location have always been key issues in the economic debate. What are the effects of free trade and globalization? What are the driving forces behind worldwide urbanization? Paul Krugman has formulated a new theory to answer these questions. He has thereby integrated the previously disparate research fields of international trade and economic geography.

Krugman's approach is based on the premise that many goods and services can be produced more cheaply in long series, a concept generally known as economies of scale. Meanwhile, consumers demand a varied supply of goods. As a result, small-scale production for a local market is replaced by large-scale production for the world market, where firms with similar products compete with one another.

Traditional trade theory assumes that countries are different and explains why some countries export agricultural products whereas others export industrial goods. The new theory clarifies why worldwide trade is in fact dominated by countries which not only have similar conditions, but also trade in similar products -- for instance, a country such as Sweden that both exports and imports cars. This kind of trade enables specialization and large-scale production, which result in lower prices and a greater diversity of commodities.

Economies of scale combined with reduced transport costs also help to explain why an increasingly larger share of the world population lives in cities and why similar economic activities are concentrated in the same locations. Lower transport costs can trigger a self-reinforcing process whereby a growing metropolitan population gives rise to increased large-scale production, higher real wages and a more diversified supply of goods. This, in turn, stimulates further migration to cities. Krugman's theories have shown that the outcome of these processes can well be that regions become divided into a high-technology urbanized core and a less developed "periphery".

Got that? (I'm sorry to have to report that you're responsible for all this material on the midterm.)

We're reminded, of course, that the Nobel is awarded, not for the work we're familiar with, but for this important work done mostly before he entered the current phase of his career, in which he came to be known as perhaps the single most important media voice for political sanity through the darkest years of the Bush regime.

When I heard the Nobel news, the first thing I thought of was the look on "Big Dick" Cheney's and Chimpy the Prez's pusses when they heard the news. Of course by now Big Dick and Chimpy have shrunk to little more than a historical footnote, one that should read something like this:

Between January 2001 and January 2009 they not only won but permanently retired the award for Worst Presidential Administration in the History of the Republic. About all that's left for them is to see how much loot they can still cart off, for themselves and on behalf of their cronies, and all the totalitarian and ideologically extremist rules, regulations, and appointees they can ram into the system in their way out.

So while it's not as sweet as it once might have been, there's still something mighty satisfying about Krugman receiving the Nobel just as Cheney and Chimpy are sliding onto their places on the Dunce Chairs of History. It's just the tiniest sense of order in the universe.

Oh sure, I make fun of all the vacation days the bum takes off from his column-writing. (Really, now, how long does it take to type 750 words?) And if I ever had a job that involved a contract, I'd want written into that contract that I get all "Krugman days" off. The fact remains that Krugman columns have been quoted so often in DWT that the guy is practically and involuntary (and unpaid -- which, come to think of it, means he's on the same pay scale as the rest of us) co-conspirator.

But through the darkest years of the Bush regime, the first term, in which the media conspired to such a large degree with the regime to brand any dissent from regime dogma as unpatriotic, even traitorous, I can't begin to convey how much I depended on Krugman's usually lonely twice-weekly voice of sanity. Through that darkest period of my political life, there was our Paul, and his Sunday NYT colleague Frank Rich, and The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, and eventually Air America Radio, whose potential would never be realized but which offered a roster of hard-hitting, no-bullshit on-air hosts and its best demonstration of what that promise could be in the zany and outrageous morning show, Morning Sedition.

As the story of the Bush regime turned from its extremist ideology and war-mongering to its criminal incompetence, pervasive corruption, and constitutional mayhem, our Paul's economics background came more and more into play. While Alan Greenspan, the Moe of establishment economics stooges, was still saying, "Housing bubble? What housing bubble?," Paul was trying to warn us, to prepare us, for pretty much what has happened.

In the next day or two I want to come back to the specific substantive importance of Paul's contributions, but for now I'm getting a helluva kick out of listening to the right-wingers squeal like stuck pigs about his Nobel.

Jakarta - Usianya tak lagi muda, sudah kepala tiga . Namun Antonio Di Natale terus berusaha membuktikan bahwa dirinya paling tidak pernah memiliki karir yang bagus bersama timnas Italia.

Kenyataannya, karir yang dikejar tersebut perlahan-lahan mulai didapatkan. Keberadaannya di skuad Azzurri mulai makin diperhitungkan. Di Natale makin sering dijadikan starter dalam satu setengah tahun terakhir.

Sebenarnya pria kelahiran 13 Oktober 1977 itu sudah mendapat kesempatan main di timnas Italia sejak 2002, saat tim masih ditangani Giovanni Trapattoni. Laga debut dilakoninya di akhir November tahun itu melawan Turki. Uniknya, momen itu diperoleh tiga bulan setelah ia bermain di Seri A (bersama Empoli).

Akan tetapi kiprah Di Natale masih sekadar numpang lewat. Ia tidak sering lagi dipanggil, termasuk untuk mengikuti dua turnamen besar setelah itu, yakni Euro 2004 dan Piala Dunia 2006.

Baru mulai 2007 Di Natale lebih akrab dengan pemanggilan timnas. Penampilannya yang konsisten bersama Udinese sepertinya menjadi langkah penting bagi karir internasionalnya. Ia pun sering dilibatkan dalam upaya Italia meraih satu tiket ke Austria-Swiss.

"Marcello Lippi memberi saya rasa percaya diri dan saya akan terus berusaha untuk memberikan kontribusi bagi tim nasional," ujar Di Natale tentang aksi heroiknya itu.

Total sudah sembilan gol ia ukir dari 22 caps yang dimiliki. Itu berarti ia mampu mencetak satu gol dalam setiap tiga pertandingan. Dalam tiga musim terakhir bersama Udinese ia mengemas 45 gol di Seri A.

Jika mampu menjaga konsistensi permainan, kans Di Natale untuk mengikuti Piala Dunia 2010 terbuka lebar -- jika Italia lolos ke putaran final. BEIJING - Usain Bolt loves the cameras, the cameras love Usain Bolt, and when they connected during his third victory lap of these Olympics, he smiled that infectious smile and raised three fingers.

Bolt capped his spectacular Summer Games by tearing through his portion of the 400-meter relay Friday night, setting up Jamaica's victory in 37.10 seconds to break a 16-year-old world record.

It was the perfect way to end a weeklong coming-out party that began with a world record of 9.69 in the 100 meters Saturday, followed by a world record of 19.30 in the 200 meters Wednesday.

"The greatest Olympics ever," Bolt called it.

Who could argue?

Bolt joins quite a list: The only other men to win gold medals in the 100, 200 and the sprint relay at one Olympics were Carl Lewis in 1984, Bobby Morrow in 1956 and Jesse Owens in 1936. None of those greats set world records in either the 100 or 200, though, much less both.

"People can only dream of doing what he's done. He's basically cemented himself as a legend of track and field," said Bolt's relay teammate Michael Frater. "I don't think any performance can top what he's done here."

If not for Michael Phelps, the Beijing Games would go down in history as the Bolt Games.

Impossible as it might have seemed after Phelps collected his Olympics-record eight golds in the pool, the 6-foot-5 sprinter managed to share top billing thanks to speed that stuns and charisma that gets people talking.

And while there was drama at the Water Cube — one of Phelps' golds came by a hundredth of a second, another came thanks to a relay teammate's huge comeback — Bolt left no room for doubt in any of his three events at the Bird's Nest.

He won the 100 by 0.20, then the 200 by 0.66. The margin in the relay, 0.96 over second-place Trinidad and Tobago, was the biggest in that event at the Olympics since 1936. Japan was third.

"We simply couldn't compete," Trinidad and Tobago's Marc Burns said.

The relay actually was close after Nesta Carter ran the first leg for Jamaica, and Frater the second. Bolt changed that quickly, putting his team way out in front, even if he wasn't running the leg he hoped.

"Usain wanted to start. He wanted to lay the hammer down from the start," Frater said. "The coaches wanted him to run the third leg. We listened to the coaches."

Good call.

After passing along the baton to anchor Asafa Powell — no small feat, if you ask the U.S. teams that bungled exchanges in qualifying a night earlier, or the Jamaican women, who did the same thing earlier Friday — Bolt pointed at Powell and yelled encouragement. Even as Bolt slowed in his lane, his work done, the other teams' anchors couldn't catch him for about 30 meters — that's how big Jamaica's lead was.

The Jamaicans shattered the old mark of 37.40, originally set by a U.S. team that included Lewis at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, then matched by another American quartet in 1993.

With that latest gold and world record secured, Bolt went into his now-familiar postrace routine. He yanked off his golden spikes and did a barefoot dance. He pointed his fingers to the sky, pantomiming an archer's stance.

This time, though, thrilled to be part of a team effort, he added a new wrinkle, chest-bumping Powell, the man who held the 100 record for three years until this kid came along. It was Powell's first Olympic medal.

"I said to Asafa, 'Can we do this?'" Bolt recounted, "and he was like, 'Don't worry, mon, we got this one.'"

Not that it's all that easy to get a baton all the way around a track, not at high speed, at the Olympics, with the world watching. How else to explain all of the goof-ups? First by the U.S. men in qualifying Thursday — which is why they weren't on the track to push Bolt, Powell and Co. in the final — then by the U.S. women in 400 qualifying and then by the Jamaican women in the 400 final.

That last error wiped out the Caribbean island's bid to become only the second country to go 6-for-6 in the sprinting events at an Olympics; the United States won the men's and women's 100s, 200s and 400 relays at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, which were boycotted by the Soviet Union.

Still, 5-of-6 ain't bad. Consider the flip side: The United States will leave an Olympics 0-for-6 in the sprint races for the first time.

"All I can say is: Yo, Jamaican sprinters, taking over the world," Bolt said.

The Jamaicans were overwhelming favorites in the women's 400 relay final, given that their squad boasted the 100 (Shelly-Ann Fraser) and 200 (Veronica Campbell-Brown) champions, along with the women who tied for silver in the 100 (Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson).

Second-leg runner Simpson tried to hand off the stick, vigorously shaking her hand forward, and Stewart tried to grab it, forcefully thrusting her hand backward, but they simply could not get the exchange done. Eventually, they bumped into each other, and Jamaica was disqualified. Russia won in 42.31.

As the replays of the miscue ran repeatedly on the overhead video boards, Simpson, Stewart and anchor Campbell-Brown watched and discussed what happened.

Even with that disappointment, Jamaica's six overall gold medals in track and field are one more than the U.S. team, which got No. 5 from Bryan Clay in the decathlon Friday.

"I'd love for this to be a spark for the decathlon," said Clay, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, "and bring it back to the forefront."

In other medal events, Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia won the women's 5,000 in 15 minutes, 41.40 seconds, more than 1 1/2 minutes slower than her world record, to add that gold to the one she earned in the 10,000; Steve Hooker won Australia's first track gold medal of these Summer Games and cleared an Olympic-record 19 feet, 6 3/4 inches (5.96 meters) in the pole vault; and Maurren Higa Maggi of Brazil leaped 23 feet, 1 1/4 inches (7.04 meters) on her first attempt to beat defending Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia by a half-inch in the women's long jump.

The long jump bronze went to Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria, who originally didn't qualify for the final but made the field when Lyudmila Blonska of Ukraine was kicked out because she tested positive for a steroid after winning the silver medal in the heptathlon last weekend.

There were those who wondered whether doping cases like hers would define track and field at the 2008 Olympics. Instead, Bolt provided the longest-lasting memories, with his excellence and his exuberance.

The only thing International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge had to worry about was whether the Jamaican was having too good a time. Instead of thanking Bolt, Rogge chastised him, saying the sprinter didn't show enough respect for his opponents and engaged in too much "Look at me" hot-dogging.

Bolt shrugged off the criticism.

"The crowd loves it — they love when I put on a show for them," Bolt said. "They come out and pay their money to see a good performance and also to see a personality. So I go out there and give them a show."

Park Ji-Sung's game is centred upon a high work ethic and discipline and it these properties that have driven him to the top. In 2005 Park's home city of Suwon unveiled a road named after him, 'Park Ji-Sung Road' to honour his contribution to the team in the tournament. South Korea coach Guus Hiddink headed back to Europe for PSV Eindhoven in August 2003 but the young midfielder had left a great impression, so much so that Hiddink brought Ji-Sung with him to the Eredivisie. However, the Korean's first year at PSV was difficult, blighted by problems settling into Dutch life and the language barrier. He did not feature much in his first season making only eight appearances, nonetheless PSV did win the league title. Yet despite the initial failure the following season saw Park Ji-Sung unexpectedly transformed into a key player at the Philips Stadion. PSV had been predicted to struggle before the 2004-2005 season began (having sold star players such as Robben and Kezman to Chelsea) but the emergence of Ji-Sung as a midfield dynamo proved significant as they swept to the Dutch league and cup double. Not only domestically, he impressed during PSV's superb run in the Champions League as well, scoring in the second leg of the semi-final against AC Milan. Park then helped South Korea book their place in their sixth consecutive World Cup by scoring in the 4-0 thrashing of Kuwait. With the season over, rumours began that he was being tracked by Sir Alex Ferguson and it wasn't long before a move was made. At the age of 12, Iniesta was spotted by Barça scouts at his local club Albacete Balompié. He was switftly signed and worked his way up the club ranks. Louis van Gaal handed him his debut on 29 October, 2002, a UEFA Champions League game against Club Brugge KV. He appeared eleven times in the league in 2003-04, mostly as a deputy for Camp Nou favourite Ronaldinho, as Barça sealed second place, scoring once.

He displayed an unselfish attitude by regularly aiding strikers Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho but performed poorly in front of goal - denied by the woodwork on several occasions, he found the net just twice.

Iniesta's improvement as a player continued in the 2005-06 and because of the absence of Xavi due to injury, he was given regular starts in midfield. The increased playing time offered to him at the highest level gave him the opportunity to blossom into a superb midfielder. His contribution to the team was praised by Coach Frank Rijkaard. However, his call up to the Spanish squad for the World Cup came as a surprise to football pundits.

On August 22, 2006 Andres lifted the Joan Gamper Trophy as the captain of the team after defeating German side Bayern München 4-0.

His current contract with FC Barcelona ends in June of 2014.[3] On July 19th he was linked with a move to rivals Real Madrid. Reports in newspapers suggested Real was prepared to pay 60 million euros for him [4] which would trigger his release clause. However, he reiterated his desire to remain with Barça by saying "I can’t do anything about it but I’d like to insist once again that I want to stay here. When I say I want to retire in Barça, I say it with all my heart." [5]

According to the Spanish football magazine Don Balón,a member of European Sports Magazines, Iniesta has been one of the most constant performers in the last 2 seasons of Primera Division, placing 5th in 2006-2007[6], and 4th in 2007-2008[7] on their annual rating system Ranking Don Balón.

OMAHA, Neb. — When you're a 41-year-old woman and still competing against the top swimmers in the world, the old body doesn't always work quite like it used to.

For Dara Torres, she's had rotator cuff surgery and three surgeries on her knees.

However, her ears have always worked fine. And what she's hearing in the swimming world is spoiling the feel-good story of these U.S. Olympic trials.

Of all the swimmers whom cynics accuse of being dopers, Torres is one of the leading suspects. The only hard evidence is her age and her times.

At an age when most people are embarrassed just to be seen in a swimsuit, Torres amazingly won the 50- and 100-meter freestyles to book an improbable berth on her record fifth Olympic team. She even set American records in the events.

"In some ways, I'm like all the other swimmers here, because I still feel the passion for what I do," Torres said. "In some ways I'm like none of them, because I've lived their lives twice."

After two failed marriages and a baby, she is swimming faster now than she did 15 to 20 years ago.

Even her new relationship with David Hoffman, a 56-year-old reproductive endocrinologist, has raised some eyebrows.

Various swimming blogs have openly suggested she's doping. It's a rumor that has haunted her since she won two relay golds and three individual bronzes in the 2000 Olympics at age 33.

Torres has gone on the offensive. She met with Travis Tygart, head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, and asked to be tested more.

"I said, 'Look, I want to be an open book,' " Torres said. "DNA test me. Blood test me. Urine test me. Whatever you want to do. Just test me because I want people to know that I am doing this right."

As part of a new USADA program, Project Believe, she's one of about a dozen athletes who gets blood and urine taken at any time. Sometimes she's asked to go to the nearest lab.

"It's a pain," she said. "It's a real pain. But I asked for this and I want to prove that I'm clean, so to me it's worth it."

Tygart said he's disappointed about the shadow of doubt that hangs over swimmers like Torres.

"It's a sad world when I can't watch the trials with my 6-year-old daughter without the commentators addressing the drug issue,'' he said. "And while we all want to have a stamp of cleanliness, at the end of day, the only thing you can trust is that our athletes are being held to the highest standards available today."

Torres' supporters, namely about 5,000 swimmers at the Masters World Championships, tell her it's great to see a 40-year-old in the Olympics. As if she didn't feel old enough, men's swimming star Michael Phelps calls her Mom.

"When I first started, people said I was an inspiration," she said. "But I think it's been a complete 180 turn. I have so many people coming up to me now and telling me about their stories and what's changed in their lives and I feel like I'm getting inspiration from other people.

"Age is just a number. I have great people around me and I'm able to recover and, at my age, it's all about recovery."

But she can expect many more questions in Beijing next month.

"Unfortunately, there have been athletes in the past who've sat there and looked everyone in the eyes and said, 'I have not taken drugs,' and now they're either in jail or being indicted," Torres said. "You are now guilty until proven innocent.
